Cerro Monserrate
Cerro Monserrate - Sunday 13 May (Mothers' Day)
Located at 10,341' (3152 m.) above sea level, Cerro Monserrate overlooks the Colombian capital city of Bogotá. In addition to being a tourist attraction, it is also considered to be a religious and sacred place dating back to the Muisca people. In addition to the obvious, Sunday also is family day - and because today is Mothers' Day Sunday, there were lots and lots of families.

We continued via Carrera 7, the sendero peatonal (walk street) where throngs of locals were enjoying street food (including "big ass ants" and hot dogs, arepas, cotton candy, papitas and frutas), street artists, street musicians and street performers. This is why we travel!

One has the option to walk, take the little funicular or take the teleférico. We opted for the latter and, because it is Sunday, we got 50% discount!

From the top, one can appreciate the altitude and the constantly changing weather.

View of Bogatá from the top |
The church at the top is quite plain inside, but is perched above stone plazas and verdant gardens.
I walked the 14 Stations of the Cross that are sprinkled along a steep path
(Note: I realize I am missing one...).

We walked to and from without rain (a bit of drizzle only)

Old man dancing with serpent puppet - probably the most bizarre of the street performances! |
