Medellín Graffiti


As noted in an earlier post, we were first introduced to Street Art/Graffiti in Melbourne, Australia.
We then took the Graffiti tour in Bogotá. While in Medellín, we could appreciate the Street Art/Graffiti there. Below are some highlights.

We walked past this everyday - across from our hotel.

This wall is about half-way between El Poblado metro station and our hotel - a good rest stop on the hike up the hill! 


These beauties were at the Universidad metro stop - en route to Jardín Botánica. 













And this was on a rooftop, visible from the metro-cable en route to Parque Arví.

May 22 and 23, 2018 We were last in Cartagena in April 2011 for Semana Santa (Holy Week). We agree with the claim that it is the emerald in the crown of Latin America and deserving of the designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We are staying in the same boutique hotel Casa la Fe... Across the street from  Plaza Fernández Madrid (below) Our first stop was to La Cevichería .  Cartagena is very colorful. The historic old town is easily navigated (except for the heat).  Below are street scenes...    Cartagena was a major slave port in New Spain. Some of the Africanos escaped and created free communities called Palenques . The woman in colorful dress above is a palenqueña .  The plaza, in front of the Iglesia de San Pedro Claver, hosts delightful metal sculptures by the cartageno artist Edgardo Carmona, depicting daily life ( la vida cotidiana ).    Play...

Jardín Botánica - Medellín

Monday, 21 May, 2018 We walked 15 minutes down Calle 10 to our metro station ( Poblado ), paid COP $4800 ($1.75 USD) for our two "old persons" tickets and rode to the Universidad station. From there we merely walked across the street to the entrance of the Jardín Botánico (Botanic Garden). Wow! Free of charge and smack-dab in the middle of the city! Desierto (desert) La Selva Tropical (tropical jungle) La Laguna We loved all the different kinds of palm trees! The garden boasts 120 species! Colombia has the most palms in the Americas, second most in the world. Colombia also boasts both the tallest palms in the world (in Cocora) and the smallest. Las Palmas We saw actual butterflies and appreciated the mariposa exhibit. Below left is the actual Chocolate Mariposa. To the right is how we learned... Mariposa 89 (Butterfly 89 - well named!)
