El Mirador

Views from El Mirador, the rooftop restaurant/bar of Hotel de la Opera. You can get a sense of how the weather changes here in Bogotá. You can also see one of the many walk streets (peatonales).



What is not apparent is the sense of security. There are private guards in front of many establishments. There also are security guards at every museum or building we have toured. These tend to be wearing ties (matching, depending on the establishment) and very helpful. There is also a military presence that, unlike in most other countries we have visited in Latin America, is actually comforting. They answer our questions about directions and although armed, are very courteous and friendly - not afraid to smile. Clearly, Colombia is working hard to make tourists feel safe and welcome.

As noted in an earlier post, we were first introduced to Street Art/Graffiti in Melbourne, Australia. We then took the Graffiti tour in Bogotá. While in Medellín, we could appreciate the Street Art/Graffiti there. Below are some highlights. Our favorite We walked past this everyday - across from our hotel. This wall is about half-way between El Poblado metro station and our hotel - a good rest stop on the hike up the hill!  These beauties were at the Universidad metro stop - en route to Jardín Botánica .  And this was on a rooftop, visible from the metro-cable en route to Parque Arví .

CARTAGENA-2018

May 22 and 23, 2018 We were last in Cartagena in April 2011 for Semana Santa (Holy Week). We agree with the claim that it is the emerald in the crown of Latin America and deserving of the designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We are staying in the same boutique hotel Casa la Fe... Across the street from  Plaza Fernández Madrid (below) Our first stop was to La Cevichería .  Cartagena is very colorful. The historic old town is easily navigated (except for the heat).  Below are street scenes...    Cartagena was a major slave port in New Spain. Some of the Africanos escaped and created free communities called Palenques . The woman in colorful dress above is a palenqueña .  The plaza, in front of the Iglesia de San Pedro Claver, hosts delightful metal sculptures by the cartageno artist Edgardo Carmona, depicting daily life ( la vida cotidiana ).    Play...

La Piedra and Guatapé

Ann and Ned 1/2-way up  La Piedra Saturday, 19 May, 2018  While the rest of the world watched the Royal Wedding (note capital letters), we slept in preparation for our road trip with Jorge to the towns of El Peñol and Guatapé, with an anticipated 200 meter climb up the 675  escalones  (steps) to the top of  La Piedra  ("The Rock"). Jorge Photo taken from replica of El Peñol We began our adventure in the town of (replicated) El Peñol. In order to accommodate the industrial and population growth of Medellín, a massive hydro-electric dam was built, and 25 square miles of the Abrrá Valley was flooded in the 1970s. Highly controversial, this meant displacing the farmers and families that had lived and worked the land for generations. As part of the deal, the EPM ( Empresas Públicas de Medellín ) had to rebuild the town of El Peñol and relocate the displaced population.
