Museo Botero |
Friends of ours said that if we do nothing else while in Bogatá, we must-must-must visit Museo Botero. The museum is mere few blocks from our hotel, situated in an elegant old home with lovely gardens.

Pareja Bailando (Couple Dancing) |
Fernando Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia in 1932. His figures, both in paintings and sculptures are "proportionally exaggerated" - Although not corpulent himself, he loved roundness!
Many of his still lifes feature pears. His birds are not at all aerodynamic, so flight would be impossible. His horses would never enter the Kentucky Derby and his cats make our building cat MoMo look svelte!
In addition to being a wonderful and prolific artist, he amassed an amazing art collection, which he then donated to his birth country so that the people of Colombia could appreciate fine art free of charge. Much of the impressive collection is from his pals, Salvador Dali among them. Below is my favorite Dali piece. It warrants its very own room. The dude had excellent taste in both friends and art (Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Salvador
Dali, etc.).

Ned con Hombre Fumando Pipa (Man Smoking Pipe) by Pablo Picaso |
Looks like a great museum -- I like the juxtaposition of Ned by Hombre Fumando Pipa. You should see the cover of this week's Montecito Journal. Apparently local "artist" Brooke Smiley was channeling Botero when she created a 6-foot tall sculpture of a naked woman out of Montecito mud which now stands on corner of State and Anapamu. I'll try to send you link or I'll scan it later so you can see the similarity. It's quite something. Continue to enjoy! Hugs. Hattie
